Beloved children of the light, as the shadows lengthen in this evening hour, let us turn our hearts once more to the sacred words spoken to our father Abraham: "Fear not, Abram! I am your shield; your reward will be very great." These words, uttered in the quiet of a vision after the turmoil of battle and the rescue of Lot, come to us from Genesis, where the patriarch stands childless yet called to be the father of nations. In that ancient moment, God meets human anxiety with divine assurance, shielding the soul from fear of the unknown future. The Early Church Fathers, in their luminous commentaries preserved in the great Catena, unfold this mystery with profound insight. St. Ambrose teaches that the Lord Himself becomes the impenetrable shield for those who walk by faith, protecting not merely the body but the very hope of the promise. Origen, reflecting on the same passage, notes how Abraham's reward transcends earthly inheritance, pointing already to the heavenly city whose maker is God. St. Augustine, in his homilies on the Psalms and Genesis, echoes this by declaring that true reward lies not in fleeting possessions but in the eternal vision of the Most High, where fear is swallowed up in love. From the pulpit of the ancient Church, we hear these voices calling us away from the terrors of this age. Abraham's story is our own: we too stand after many conflicts, wondering if the promises will hold. Yet the Fathers remind us that the shield is Christ, the Word made flesh, who fulfills what was spoken to the patriarch. The great reward is nothing less than participation in the divine life, sealed in the sacraments and guarded by the prayers of the saints. Let this evening meditation sink deep into your souls. Cast aside every fear, for the Lord who spoke to Abram speaks still through His Church. Cling to the shield of faith, and await with joy the reward that surpasses all understanding. In the quiet of prayer, may His peace descend upon you. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #001of220 #Catholic
