Verse #141 of 220
Dearly beloved in Christ, as the sun sets on this day and we gather in spirit for this evening reflection, I speak to you as one of the ancient shepherds of the flock, drawing from the wellsprings of the Apostolic tradition. The verse before us, from the First Epistle of Saint John, chapter four, verse eighteen, declares with divine authority: 'There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.' In the historical context of the late first century, the beloved disciple wrote to communities facing schism and the threat of persecution under Roman rule. Love was not an abstract concept but the living bond that held the Church together amid trials.
The Early Church Fathers expounded this richly. Saint Augustine of Hippo, in his Ten Homilies on the First Epistle of John, teaches that this fear is the fear of punishment, which perfect charity expels, for 'love is the fulfilling of the law.' He contrasts the servile fear with the chaste fear that remains even in the perfected soul, a fear not of wrath but of separation from the Beloved. Similarly, in the Catena Aurea compiled by Saint Thomas Aquinas, we find the glosses of the Fathers: Bede the Venerable notes that love makes us bold, as the Apostles were after Pentecost, preaching without fear.
Consider the martyrs of the early Church, like Saint Polycarp, who faced the flames with love for Christ dominating his heart. Fear torments because it focuses on self-preservation, but love directs us outward to God and neighbor. In these evening hours, let us cultivate this perfect love through contemplation of the Cross, where Christ's love conquered all fear.
Furthermore, drawing from the rich tradition preserved in the Catena, Saint John Chrysostom in his commentaries emphasizes the practical outworking of this love in daily life, urging the faithful to acts of mercy that dispel the anxieties of scarcity. The Apostle's words assure us that as we grow in love, fear diminishes, leading to that peace which surpasses understanding, a hallmark of the Christian life in the patristic era.
Brethren, let this message sink deep. Reject the fears of the world – fear of failure, fear of death, fear of judgment – and embrace the love that comes from above. As the sun of this day declines, may the light of divine love rise in your souls.
