Verse #127 of 220

Brethren beloved, as the evening shadows lengthen and our thoughts turn toward rest, let us ponder anew the tender words of our Savior: "Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom." Spoken in the days when Christ journeyed toward Jerusalem, these words fell upon disciples still learning to trust amid warnings of hypocrisy, hidden things brought to light, and the greater fear of Him who holds power over body and soul alike. In the sacred narrative of Luke, our Lord had just urged them to confess Him before men and not to fear those who can kill only the body. The little flock, few in number yet chosen from the world, stood then as now against the powers of this age. The Early Church Fathers saw in this scene the very life of the persecuted faithful. Saint Ambrose reminds us that the flock appears small because it is gathered not by earthly might but by the narrow way of the Gospel, while Saint Bede notes that the kingdom is promised not as a reward for merit alone but as the Father’s delight in His children. Drawing from the rich catena of ancient witnesses, we hear Saint John Chrysostom exhorting the faithful that fear of man fades when the soul beholds the eternal King who clothes the lilies and feeds the sparrows. Augustine, preaching in Hippo, taught that this little flock, though scattered by trials, receives the kingdom because the Father has already given it in the Son. The historical memory of the early martyrs echoes here: men and women who faced lions and flames yet clung to the assurance that their Father’s pleasure outweighed every threat. In our own evening hour, let these words settle like dew upon weary hearts. The flock remains little, yet the kingdom is already given. Turn from anxious striving, beloved, and rest in the Father who delights to bestow His own life upon you. May the peace of Christ guard your sleep until the dawn of the resurrection. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #127of220 #Catholic
