Verse #164 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, as the evening shadows lengthen and we gather in quiet reflection, let us turn our hearts to the prophetic voice of Isaiah, who declares with holy joy: 'I will greatly rejoice in the LORD... for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation.' Written amid the ruins of exile and the promise of restoration, this verse echoes the return of God's people from Babylon, where the prophet foretells not mere earthly garments but the divine investiture of grace that clothes the soul in righteousness.
In the days of the early Church, the Fathers saw here a profound mystery fulfilled in the waters of baptism. St. Cyril of Jerusalem, in his catechetical lectures, spoke of the white robe placed upon the newly baptized as the visible sign of this invisible clothing, transforming the catechumen from the rags of sin into the splendor of the redeemed. Likewise, Origen, drawing from the Septuagint, taught that these garments are woven by the Word Himself, who adorns the Church as a bride prepared for her heavenly Bridegroom.
The historical context deepens our wonder. Isaiah prophesied to a people stripped of temple and king, yet he points beyond the garments of the high priest to the eternal salvation purchased by the suffering Servant. St. Augustine, in his sermons on the Psalms, connects this to the robe of Christ’s passion, noting how the seamless tunic cast lots for at Calvary becomes the seamless unity of the faithful, now clothed in mercy rather than condemnation.
From the Catena Aurea we hear echoes of St. John Chrysostom, who urges us to cast off the filthy garments of worldly ambition and receive instead the festal robe of humility and charity. In the evening of our lives, when worldly lights fade, this clothing remains luminous, a foretaste of the wedding feast where no one is found without the proper attire.
Let us therefore rejoice, not in fleeting comforts, but in the Lord who has covered our shame with His own righteousness. May this sacred clothing guard us through the night and awaken us at dawn to the light of resurrection. Amen.
