Verse #087 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, as the evening shadows lengthen and we gather in spirit before the altar of the Lord, let us ponder the tender words of the prophet Jeremiah from the book of Lamentations, chapter three, verse fifty-seven: "Thou drewest near in the day when I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not." In the desolate days following the fall of Jerusalem, when the holy city lay waste and the people of Israel wandered in chains, the prophet lifted his voice from the pit of affliction. He called upon the Lord amid tears and lament, and the Lord drew near with that ancient promise first given to Abraham and renewed through the ages: Fear not.
The holy fathers of the early Church, those who stood firm against the storms of heresy and persecution, expounded richly on this divine assurance. St. Augustine, in his discourses on the Psalms, teaches that true fear of the Lord is not terror but reverence, the beginning of wisdom that banishes all worldly dread. He writes that when the soul cries out in its distress, the Lord approaches as a physician to the wounded, whispering the same words He spoke to Jeremiah. Likewise, St. John Chrysostom, in his homilies on the Gospels, draws from the Catena of sacred tradition to show how Christ Himself echoes this command to His disciples amid tempests and trials: "Be not afraid," for He who calms the seas is ever near.
Consider the martyrs of our faith, such as St. Polycarp and St. Ignatius, who faced the lions and the flames without trembling. In their epistles, preserved for us by the Church, they urge the faithful to cast aside fear of death, for the Lord who said "Fear not" to the prophet has fulfilled it in His own resurrection. The Catena Aurea gathers these voices, reminding us that God's nearness transforms lament into hope, turning the night of sorrow into the dawn of eternal joy.
My children, in these latter days when anxieties assail the heart, remember the prophet's cry and the Lord's response. Call upon Him, and He will draw near, saying again, Have no fear. Let this evening meditation strengthen your souls for the morrow.
