Verse #142 of 220
Beloved brethren gathered in the fading light of this evening hour, let us turn our hearts to the words spoken from the throne of heaven itself in the Revelation of the beloved disciple: 'Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last.' These words fell upon the ears of John as he stood in exile upon the rocky shores of Patmos, amid the roar of the sea and the weight of imperial persecution under Domitian. The apostle, who had leaned upon the Lord's breast at supper, now falls as one dead before the vision of the risen Christ, whose eyes burn like flame and whose voice thunders like many waters. Yet the hand that once touched the eyes of the blind now rests upon him, lifting him from fear into the assurance of eternity.
In the wisdom of the fathers, as gathered in the Catena upon this sacred text, we hear the voice of Victorinus of Pettau reminding us that Christ declares Himself the beginning and the end, the one who was before all ages and shall be after the consummation of the world. Irenaeus, in his refutation of heresies, draws forth the same truth: the Son of God, through whom all things were made, has assumed our flesh to conquer death, rendering the terrors of this age as shadows before His eternal light. Augustine, too, in his homilies on the Psalms, echoes that the fear which grips the soul in trial is dispelled only when we behold the Alpha and Omega who holds the keys of death and Hades. Thus the Lord speaks not merely to John but to every soul trembling in the darkness of affliction, whether from the sword of the tyrant or the secret assaults of the enemy within.
Consider, dear children of the Church, how this revelation came during the Lord's Day, the first day of the week, when the faithful gathered in hidden assemblies to break bread and proclaim the resurrection. John, though banished, remained united in spirit with those seven churches whose lamps stood before the throne. The message of 'fear not' is no gentle platitude but the proclamation of victory already won. Christ, who tasted death for every man, now lives forevermore, and in His pierced hands He carries the authority to open the seals of history itself. The fathers teach us that this vision strengthens the martyrs who would soon shed their blood, for the first and the last is the same who said, 'I am with you always, even to the end of the age.'
As the evening shadows lengthen and we prepare for rest, let these words anchor our souls. Whatever storm rages without or within, the eternal Word speaks: do not be afraid. He who is before the foundation of the world and after its passing holds you in His grasp. May the peace of this assurance fill your hearts until the dawn of the new day dawns upon us all.
