Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren, as the shadows of evening gather around us in this sacred hour, let us turn our hearts to the words of our Savior from the upper room: 'that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.' These words, spoken on the eve of His passion, echo through the centuries from the lips of the Divine Master to the ears of the faithful. In the Gospel of John, chapter fifteen, our Lord reveals Himself as the true vine, and we as the branches, called to abide in Him amid the trials of this world. Drawing from the wisdom of the Early Church, St. Augustine teaches in his homilies that this joy is not the fleeting pleasure of earthly things but the deep gladness that flows from union with Christ. He notes how the Lord, before ascending the cross, plants this seed of joy in His disciples so that they might endure the coming persecutions with hearts anchored in divine love. Likewise, St. John Chrysostom, in his commentary preserved in the Catena Aurea, explains that the completeness of joy arises when we keep the commandments and remain grafted to the vine, bearing fruit that glorifies the Father. The historical context reminds us that these words were uttered in Jerusalem, where the early Christians would soon face the sword and the arena, yet they found their joy made full in the resurrection hope. Consider, dear children of the Church, how the Fathers like St. Cyril of Alexandria expound that this joy counters the sorrow of the world. In the Catena, we read that as branches pruned by the vinedresser, we may feel the pain of detachment from sin, yet it leads to abundant life. The Early Church, emerging from the catacombs and facing imperial edicts, clung to this promise: joy complete not in comfort, but in the indwelling presence of the risen Lord. Let us not fear the darkness, for in abiding, our joy becomes His own, eternal and unassailable.
