Verse #038 of 220
Beloved brethren, gathered in the twilight of this day, let us turn our hearts to the words of the Chronicler: 'Do not fear or lose heart...' from the second book, chapter twenty, verse seventeen. In the days of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, the armies of Moab, Ammon, and the Meunites gathered like a storm upon the horizon. The king, in his distress, proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah and stood in the assembly at the temple, crying out that their eyes were upon the Lord alone. It was then that the Spirit came upon Jahaziel, declaring that the battle belonged not to them but to God.
How often, my children, do we stand as Jehoshaphat did, our foes invisible yet pressing close—trials of the soul, the assaults of the adversary, the weight of worldly cares? The Early Fathers teach us this lesson with clarity. Origen, in his homilies on the books of Kings, reminds us that true warfare is waged not with swords but with prayerful stillness, for the Lord commands us to position ourselves, to stand firm, and to witness salvation. Likewise, in the Catena Aurea of the holy Aquinas, drawing from Chrysostom and Augustine, we hear echoes of this trust: fear is the child of doubt, but faith opens the eyes to see the deliverance already prepared. Augustine, in his sermons on the Psalms, declares that the heart loses courage only when it turns from the Rock; yet fixed upon Christ, it fears nothing, for He who parted the Red Sea stills every tumult.
Consider the historical moment: Jehoshaphat did not muster chariots or alliances first, but sought the Lord in the valley of decision. The enemy advanced from En-gedi, yet the people sang praises before the victory. So too the Fathers exhort us—Gregory the Great in his Moralia speaks of this as the victory of humility, where we lay down arms of self-reliance and let divine providence fight. In our own age, as in theirs, the Church faces unseen legions, yet the promise remains: you shall not need to fight; take your positions, stand, and see.
My dear flock, as evening falls, cast aside the anxieties that rob the soul of peace. Let the words of the prophet resound in your chambers. Do not fear, for the Lord is with you. This is no mere counsel but the very marrow of our faith, proclaimed from the pulpits of the ancient Church and echoing still. Stand firm in the assembly of the saints, and the salvation of the Lord shall be yours this night and forever.
