Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren in Christ, as the shadows of evening gather around us, let us ponder anew the tender words of our Savior from the holy Gospel according to Saint Luke: "Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." Spoken amid the multitudes who pressed upon Him, these words address not the powerful of this world but the humble disciples, those few who had left all to follow the Master. In the historical setting of first-century Judea, where Roman occupation and religious strife bred constant anxiety, our Lord calls His little flock to cast aside fear. The blessed Cyril of Alexandria, in his commentary preserved within the Catena Aurea, explains that this flock appears small in the eyes of men yet is precious to the Father, who delights to bestow the heavenly kingdom rather than earthly riches. Likewise, Saint Ambrose teaches that the kingdom is given not as a wage earned but as a gift of divine pleasure, freeing us from the cares that choke the seed of faith. Drawing from the patristic wisdom of the early Church, we recall how these verses sustained the faithful during persecutions. The apostles and their successors faced trials that made their number seem insignificant, yet the promise endured: the Father who provides for the birds of the air and the lilies of the field will surely grant His children the eternal inheritance. Saint Augustine reminds us in his homilies that true security lies not in barns filled with grain but in treasures stored in heaven, echoing the Lord's warning against greed that precedes this verse. Let us therefore, in this quiet evening hour, examine our hearts. Are we anxious over possessions or reputation, forgetting that our Father knows our needs? The Early Fathers exhort us to seek first the kingdom, for in doing so all else follows. This little flock, though scattered across the ages, remains united in the one Church, destined for glory.
