Verse #139 of 220

Beloved brethren, gathered in the shadow of the apostles' memory, let us attend to the words of the Prince of the Apostles, Peter, who writes to the dispersed saints: "...I will not be afraid" (1 Peter 3:6). In the days when the Church was yet young and the fires of persecution licked at her borders, this exhortation rang forth not as mere counsel but as the very echo of Abraham's household. Sarah, our mother in faith, called her husband lord and did not tremble before the uncertainties of the wilderness or the promises delayed. The holy Apostle draws us into her lineage, reminding us that daughters of Sarah—and sons likewise—are those who walk in righteousness without yielding to fear. In the historical witness preserved by the Fathers, we see how this verse was expounded in the catacombs and basilicas. St. John Chrysostom, golden-mouthed preacher of Constantinople, notes in his homilies on the First Epistle that Peter's words address not only the women of the household but the entire body of Christ facing imperial threats. Fear, he teaches, is the daughter of unbelief; it creeps in when we forget that our true Lord is not Caesar but the risen Christ. Likewise, the Catena Aurea gathers the insight of St. Augustine, who observes that Sarah's obedience was no servile terror but a free act of trust in the divine promise. Augustine writes that she feared not man, for her hope was anchored in the God who calls things that are not as though they were. Consider the context of Peter's letter, penned amid the gathering storm under Nero's reign. The faithful were scattered, their homes disrupted, their safety uncertain. Yet the Apostle does not promise earthly security; he points to the incorruptible inheritance. The Early Church Fathers, those pillars of the faith such as St. Cyprian and St. Athanasius, echo this truth: to be unafraid is to share in Christ's victory over death itself. In the face of martyrdom, they proclaimed with one voice that fear has no dominion where love abides. Thus, when trials press upon us—whether the subtle fears of daily life or the open assaults of the world—we are called to stand as Sarah did, calling upon the name of the Lord rather than shrinking back. Let this word sink deep into your hearts, O children of the promise. Do not give way to fear, for the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob has not abandoned His Church. In every generation the same invitation sounds: cast aside anxiety and embrace the liberty of the saints. May the intercession of the Blessed Virgin, who herself knew no fear at the Annunciation, strengthen us all. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #139of220 #Catholic
