Verse #108 of 220
Beloved brethren, as we stand in this sacred assembly under the gaze of the eternal heavens, let us hearken to the prophetic voice of Malachi, the final herald of the Old Covenant, who thunders from the post-exilic shadows of Judah's restored temple. In the days when the people had returned from Babylonian captivity yet languished in spiritual torpor, the prophet unveils the coming Day of the Lord, a furnace for the proud yet a dawn of mercy for those who fear the Name. The Sun of Justice, as the holy fathers expound, is none other than Christ our Lord, whose advent the Catena of patristic witness proclaims with one accord. St. Jerome, in his commentary on the Minor Prophets, declares that this Sun arises not with the fiery chariot of Elijah but with wings of healing, scattering the darkness of sin and death that had enveloped the nations since the fall. Origen, in his homilies on the prophets, likens these wings to the outstretched arms of the Crucified, from which flow the balm of resurrection and the light that quickens the soul. St. Augustine, preaching on the Psalms, echoes this when he affirms that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, transforming dread into filial reverence that prepares the heart for the leaping joy of the redeemed. Thus, those who revere His Name shall go forth from the tomb of despair, bounding like calves released from the stall, their spirits unburdened by the yoke of the law yet fulfilled in the grace of the Gospel. This imagery draws from the ancient agrarian life of Israel, where the herd leaps at the first warmth of spring, prefiguring the paschal exultation of the Church. The Early Fathers, in their catena of interpretations preserved through the ages, see here the triumph over idolatry and the vindication of the just, as Malachi bridges the Testaments to the Forerunner and the eternal Judge. Let us, then, cast aside all worldly fears and embrace this holy dread that ushers in healing, for in fearing aright we find the liberty of the children of God. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #108of220 #Catholic
