Verse #082 of 220
O beloved flock of Christ, gathered here in the sacred assembly beneath the vaulted heavens of our ancient basilica, attend with pious ears to the thunderous voice of the prophet Jeremiah in the tenth chapter and fifth verse: Fear them not. In the days when Judah trembled before the chariots of Babylon and the allure of carved idols beckoned the weak-hearted, the Lord through His servant unveiled the vanity of pagan gods. These images, hewn from forest trees and plated with silver and gold, stand upright like the palm yet utter no word; they must be carried for they cannot walk; they possess neither the power to harm nor to bless. Historically, amid the exile looming and syncretism tempting the remnant, Jeremiah contrasts the lifeless handiwork of men with the living God who formed all things by His word, calling Israel back from fear of impotent deities to trust in the Almighty. The Early Church Fathers, whose golden chain of interpretation shines in the Catena Aurea, expound this mystery with apostolic fire. St. Augustine in the City of God teaches that behind such idols lurk deceiving demons, yet they hold sway only over those who grant them fear; the Christian, sealed by baptism, despises them as St. Cyprian likewise affirms in his treatise on the vanity of idols, urging martyrs to stand fearless before imperial statues. St. John Chrysostom in his homilies on the Gospels echoes Jeremiah, proclaiming that worldly terrors—whether carved wood or tyrannical edicts—are but shadows, for the risen Lord has disarmed principalities. Origen, in his commentaries, discerns the spiritual idolatry of passions that mimic these mute gods, advising the soul to cast them aside. Thus, brethren, in every age the same counsel resounds from the pulpit of the Fathers: fear not the idols of gold, of power, or of vain philosophy, for they can neither save nor destroy those who cling to the Cross. Let us therefore lift our hearts in unwavering faith, invoking the intercession of the saints who feared nothing save God alone. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #082of220 #Catholic
