Brethren in the Lord, gathered in the sacred assembly of the faithful, let us hearken to the words of Holy Scripture from the book of Judith, chapter ten, verse sixteen: '...have no fear in your heart...' In the days when the Assyrians under Holofernes besieged Bethulia, the widow Judith, adorned with the virtues of prudence and fortitude, entered the camp of the enemy not with trembling but with the courage born of trust in the Most High. As the blessed Ambrose teaches in his treatise on widows, Judith stands as a type of the Church herself, who confronts the powers of darkness without fear, her heart fixed upon the Lord who delivers His people. The historical context reveals a time of trial akin to our own, where pagan armies threatened the chosen remnant, yet divine providence raised up this woman of valor to strike down the oppressor, prefiguring the victory of Christ over sin and death. Drawing from the patristic wisdom compiled in the Catena Aurea and the homilies of the Fathers, we see parallels to the Gospel exhortations where our Savior commands, 'Fear not, little flock,' for the Father delights to give the kingdom. Origen, in his commentaries on the spiritual warfare, reminds us that true fearlessness arises not from human strength but from the indwelling Word, which girds the soul against all terrors. St. John Chrysostom echoes this from the pulpit of Antioch, proclaiming that the heart free from fear is the temple of the Holy Ghost, unassailable by the arrows of the adversary. Let us, therefore, cast aside the anxieties of this age—fear of persecution, fear of want, fear of death—and embrace the fearless heart of Judith, who fasted and prayed before her bold deed. In the Early Church, martyrs like Perpetua and Felicity drew from such examples, their hearts untroubled as they faced the arena. Thus, beloved, go forth with no fear in your heart, for He who was with Judith is with us unto the end of the age. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #044of220 #Catholic
