Verse #079 of 220

Beloved brethren in Christ, hear the voice of the prophet Isaiah echoing through the ages from the courts of ancient Jerusalem to our own sacred assembly: 'Fear not, for thou shalt not be ashamed; neither be thou confounded, for thou shalt not be put to shame' (Isaiah 54:4). In the historical moment following the Babylonian exile, when the people of Judah returned to a ravaged Zion under the decree of Cyrus, the Lord spoke these words of consolation through His servant Isaiah to a nation stripped of its temple and dignity. The barren woman, once forsaken, would now rejoice with many children, for the covenant of peace would be established anew, unbreakable as the mountains. As the Catena Aurea gathers the golden testimonies of the Fathers, so let us draw from their wisdom: St. Jerome, in his commentary on Isaiah, teaches that this promise lifts the shame of idolatry and captivity, prefiguring the Church's triumph over the world. St. Cyril of Alexandria expounds that the reproach of widowhood is forgotten, for the Bridegroom has come, and the new covenant in Christ renders the old shadows void. St. Augustine, in his Enarrations on the Psalms, links this to the spiritual Israel, the Church, which endures no eternal confusion from persecution or sin, for the grace of baptism washes away every stain. In the early centuries, amid the fires of Diocletian and the heresies of Arius, our fathers proclaimed this fear not from pulpits and catacombs alike. The shame of the cross became glory; the reproach of the faithful became their crown. Let not the soul tremble before the judgments of men or the accusations of conscience, for He who called Abraham from Ur and Israel from Egypt has betrothed Himself to His people forever. The mountains may depart and hills be removed, yet His kindness shall not depart. Thus the Early Church, drawing richly from these oracles, saw in Isaiah's words the assurance that no power of hell shall prevail against the gates of the New Jerusalem. Fear not, therefore, O Church of God, for thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is His name. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #079of220 #Catholic
