Verse #115 of 220
Beloved brethren in the Lord, gathered in this holy assembly as the early Church once did amid the trials of Rome and the deserts of Egypt, let us ponder the words of the blessed Evangelist Matthew in chapter seventeen, verse seven: 'Arise, and do not be afraid.' These words fell from the lips of our Savior upon the Mount of Transfiguration, where Peter, James, and John beheld His face shining as the sun and His garments white as light. Moses and Elijah appeared, testifying to the fulfillment of Law and Prophets, while the bright cloud overshadowed them and the Father's voice declared Jesus His beloved Son. Overcome by this theophany, the disciples fell on their faces in great fear, for no man can see God and live unchanged.
In the historical witness of the Fathers compiled in the Catena Aurea, St. John Chrysostom explains that this fear arose not from wrath but from the awe of divine glory unveiled; yet Christ, touching them with His human hand, unites heaven and earth, bidding them arise. St. Hilary of Poitiers teaches that the command dispels terror before the mystery, inviting faith to embrace what eye hath not seen. St. Jerome notes parallels to Abraham at the oaks of Mamre and Moses at the burning bush, where 'fear not' precedes divine commission. Origen, in the same catena, observes the soul's ascent from prostration to proclamation.
As persecutions raged under emperors like Decius, these words sustained martyrs in the arenas, echoing the voice that calmed the storm on Galilee. St. Augustine reminds us that servile fear yields to filial love, for perfect charity casts out dread. Thus, beloved, in every age of trial, arise and fear not, for the Transfigured Lord abides with His Church.
