Verse #125 of 220

Beloved brethren in Christ, hear the words of our Lord as recorded by the blessed Evangelist Luke: 'Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.' In the days when the Church was young and the fires of persecution burned hot across the Roman world, these words resounded from the lips of martyrs and confessors alike. The historical context reveals our Savior addressing His disciples amid the threats of scribes and Pharisees, those who wielded earthly power to silence the truth. Yet Christ directs our gaze beyond the temporal sword to the eternal Judge who holds authority over both body and soul. As the holy fathers teach in the Catena Aurea, St. Ambrose notes that fear of bodily harm must yield to reverence for the Creator, for the soul's immortality renders death but a gateway to glory. St. John Chrysostom, preaching in the golden tongue of Antioch, expounds how the early Christians faced lions and flames not with trembling but with hymns, knowing that he who kills the body profits nothing against the resurrection hope. In our own age of subtle tyrannies, where the world seeks to slay the spirit through scorn and falsehood, let us recall the witness of St. Cyprian, who urged the faithful to stand firm as the blood of martyrs watered the seeds of the Church. The biblical narrative unfolds further in Luke's Gospel, where this exhortation precedes warnings against hypocrisy and calls to acknowledge Christ before men. Drawing from the patristic treasury, Bede the Venerable illuminates how God alone deserves our fear, for He can cast into Gehenna; thus, the saints of old embraced torments as paths to paradise. Let this verse fortify our hearts against modern idols of comfort and approval, urging us to proclaim the Gospel with apostolic boldness. Through the intercession of the early martyrs, may we live unafraid, our souls anchored in the promise of eternal life. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #125of220 #Catholic
