Verse #046 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the apostles, let us turn our hearts to the sacred words of the Maccabees, that valiant testament of faith amid persecution. 'Do not fear the words of a sinful man,' declares the holy text in 1 Maccabees 2:62, 'for his glory is dung and worms.' Ah, how these words echo through the ages, a clarion call from the mouth of Mattathias, that faithful priest who kindled the flame of resistance against the profane decrees of Antiochus.
As I, your humble servant echoing the voices of the Early Fathers, stand before you like Chrysostom thundering from the pulpit of Antioch, consider the wisdom distilled in the Catena Aurea. Though compiled for the Gospels by the angelic Doctor Aquinas, its spirit—drawing from Augustine, Jerome, and Origen—illumines even this deuterocanonical gem. Augustine, in his Confessions, reminds us that the words of sinners are but fleeting shadows, for 'the wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted' (Psalm 12:8). Yet, we are not to tremble before them, for our Lord has overcome the world.
Think, dear ones, of the martyrs who faced the taunts of emperors and executioners. Jerome, in his letters, extols the courage of those who despised the threats of tyrants, seeing in them only the 'dung and worms' of mortal vanity. Origen, that profound exegete, teaches in his homilies that fear of man ensnares the soul, but trust in God liberates it. 'Why fear ye man, who shall die, and the son of man, who shall be made as grass?' (Isaiah 51:12). The sinful man's words—be they the blasphemies of heretics, the seductions of the worldly, or the intimidations of the powerful—are but chaff in the wind of divine providence.
In our own days, my children, do not these words resound? When the voices of corruption whisper doubts, when media moguls and false prophets peddle fear, remember Mattathias' defiance. His glory, they said, would fade like refuse, devoured by decay. But ours is an eternal inheritance! As Gregory the Great urges in his Moralia, let us arm ourselves with prayer and virtue, fearing only the loss of God's grace.
So, fear not, beloved! Stand firm as the Maccabees, as the Fathers did. Let the sinful man's words fall harmless at your feet, for your glory is in Christ, the eternal King. Go forth in peace, fortified by this truth.
