Beloved brethren in the Lord, gathered here in the shadow of the holy altars, hear these words from the sacred annals of our forebears: 'Do not be afraid of their numbers...' Thus spake Judas Maccabeus to his valiant band, as recorded in the First Book of Maccabees, chapter four, verse eight. Oh, how these words echo through the ages, a clarion call against the tempests of fear that assail the soul! In the Catena Aurea, that golden chain of patristic wisdom compiled by the Angelic Doctor, we find the Fathers expounding upon similar themes in the Gospels. Consider the storm on the Sea of Galilee, where our Lord rebuked the winds and waves, saying, 'Why are you afraid, O men of little faith?' (Matthew 8:26). Saint John Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed orator, teaches us herein that fear arises not from the multitude of foes, but from the poverty of our trust in God. 'For what harm can numbers do,' he asks in his homilies, 'when the Almighty fights on our side? The hosts of heaven are arrayed with us!' Ah, my children, recall the blessed Augustine, who in his Confessions laments the fears that once bound him, only to find liberation in divine grace. He draws from the Maccabean valor, seeing in Judas a type of Christ, who with a small band of apostles conquered the world's vast empires. 'Numbers avail nothing without God,' Augustine affirms in his City of God, 'for He who created all things from nothing can multiply the few into a conquering host.' And let us not forget Origen, that profound exegete, who in his commentaries likens the enemies' numbers to the swarming thoughts of doubt and temptation. 'Fear not their multitude,' he urges, 'for the Lord is with us, as He was with Gideon, whose three hundred routed the Midianites' myriads.' In our own days, dear ones, do we not face similar hordes? The world's philosophies, the clamor of unbelief, the pressures of daily trials—these are the armies arrayed against us. Yet, as Saint Jerome reminds in his letters, 'One with God is a majority.' Therefore, let us arm ourselves not with swords of steel, but with the breastplate of faith, the shield of hope, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. In the quiet of prayer, in the sacraments' grace, we find strength unassailable. Fear not the numbers of those who oppose the truth; fear only to stray from Him who is Truth Incarnate. Go forth, then, with Maccabean courage, trusting in the God who turns weakness into triumph. May His peace, which surpasses understanding, guard your hearts. Amen. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #048of220 #Catholic
