Verse #084 of 220

Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the martyrs and the light of the Apostles, hear these words from the prophet Jeremiah, as if whispered anew by the Holy Spirit: 'Fear thou not, O my servant Jacob, saith the Lord; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shall make him afraid' (Jeremiah 30:10). Ah, what divine consolation! In this UNPLUGGED reflection, let us delve into the depths of this promise, as the Early Fathers did, drawing from the wellspring of sacred tradition. Consider, my dear ones, how Saint Jerome, that vigilant guardian of Scripture, interprets this verse in his commentaries. He sees in Jacob not merely the patriarch, but the Church herself—exiled in this vale of tears, yet assured of redemption. 'Fear not,' says the Lord, for He who scattered shall gather. Jerome reminds us that just as Israel was captive in Babylon, so are we ensnared by sin and the world's tumult. But God's salvation comes 'from afar'—from the eternal throne, reaching even to our lowly estate. Echoing this, the golden-mouthed Chrysostom, in his homilies on the prophets, urges us to cast aside fear as one discards a tattered cloak. 'Why tremble,' he asks, 'when the Almighty has pledged His aid?' Drawing from the Catena Aurea—though compiled later by the angelic Aquinas, it preserves the patristic gold— we find Augustine expounding similar themes in the Psalms: Fear is the chain of the devil, but God's word is the key that unlocks it. In Jeremiah's promise, Augustine would discern the foreshadowing of Christ, the true Savior from afar, who brings rest to the weary soul. O faithful, in these turbulent times, when shadows of doubt and peril loom like ancient foes, let this verse be your anchor. Origen, that profound allegorist, might liken Jacob's return to the soul's journey from captivity in vice to the quietude of virtue. 'None shall make him afraid'—not the tempests of life, nor the whispers of despair, for God is our fortress. As Gregory the Great teaches in his Moralia, true rest is found not in earthly repose, but in union with the Divine Will. Beloved, unplug from the clamor of the age; immerse in this timeless truth. Fear not, for the Lord saves! He restores, He quiets the storm within. Let us pray: O God, who spoke through Jeremiah, grant us that fearless faith which turns exile into homecoming. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #084of220 #Catholic
