Verse #083 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the eternal Word, I, your humble servant echoing the voices of the ancients, address you as one standing upon the sacred ambo of old. Hearken to the prophet Jeremiah, that fiery herald of God's covenant, who proclaims in chapter 23, verse 4: '...they need no longer fear...' Oh, what a balm to the soul this promise is! For in the days of exile and scattering, when the flock of Israel wandered amidst wolves and tempests, the Lord God vowed to raise up true shepherds, faithful guardians who would feed His people, so that fear should flee away like mist before the dawn.
Draw near, my children, and let us drink deeply from the wellspring of the Fathers. As the Catena Aurea gathers the golden chains of commentary upon the Gospels, so too do we chain together the wisdom of those who pondered the prophets. Saint Jerome, that lion of Bethlehem, in his commentaries on Jeremiah, reminds us that these shepherds prefigure Christ Himself, the Good Shepherd of John’s Gospel, who lays down His life for the sheep. 'No longer shall they fear,' says the Lord, for under such a Shepherd, the flock finds pasture eternal, untroubled by the prowling lion or the thief in the night.
Ah, but let us turn to Saint Augustine, the doctor of grace, who in his expositions on the Psalms—those prophetic songs—speaks of fear as the chain that binds the soul to earthly vanities. 'Fear not,' he urges, for God’s promise in Jeremiah is fulfilled in the Church, where bishops and priests, as under-shepherds, guide us from the terrors of sin and death. 'They need no longer fear'—these words echo through the ages, a divine assurance that in Christ, fear is swallowed up in victory. Remember, brethren, how Saint John Chrysostom, the golden-mouthed, in his homilies on the Old Testament, expounds upon this: the false shepherds of old scattered the flock, breeding dismay and lack. But God’s true shepherds gather and nourish, banishing fear with the rod and staff of truth.
In our own turbulent times, when shadows of doubt and peril loom large, this verse calls us to unplugged faith—stripped of modern distractions, raw and rooted in the ancient soil of Scripture. Fear not the storms of life, for the Lord has set His watch over you. As Saint Basil the Great teaches in his homilies, the fear of God casts out all lesser fears, transforming terror into trust. Imagine the scattered sheep of Jeremiah’s vision, once trembling in the wilderness, now led to green pastures where 'they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking.' This is the promise of the New Covenant, sealed in the blood of the Lamb.
Beloved, let this homily stir your hearts to courage. In the catacombs of old, our forebears faced lions without fear, fortified by such prophecies. Today, unplug from the clamor of the world; plug into the timeless grace of God. For in Him, fear dissolves like dew in the sun. Walk boldly, then, as children of light, under the Shepherd who knows you by name.
May the peace of Christ, which surpasses understanding, guard your hearts. Amen.
