Verse #013 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the eternal Word, I, your humble servant echoing the voices of the ancients, address you as did the Fathers of old. Hearken to the divine exhortation from the book of Deuteronomy, chapter one, verse twenty-nine: 'Have no dread or fear of them.' These words, spoken by Moses to the trembling Israelites before the giants of Canaan, resound through the ages like a clarion call from the throne of God Himself.
Oh, how the soul quakes at the sight of adversities! As Saint John Chrysostom teaches in his homilies, drawing from the wellsprings of Scripture, fear is the chain that binds the faithful, yet faith is the key that unlocks it. In the Catena Aurea, compiled by the angelic Doctor Thomas Aquinas, we find the Fathers uniting in chorus: fear not the earthly foes, for the Lord fights for you. Saint Augustine, that luminous beacon of Hippo, reminds us in his expositions on the Psalms that the 'them' of whom we dread are but shadows—be they the Anakim of old or the trials of our modern pilgrimage. 'God is our refuge and strength,' he proclaims, 'a very present help in trouble.' Why then do we cower?
Consider, dear ones, the timeless wisdom of Saint Jerome, who in his commentaries on the Prophets, urges us to see in Moses' words a prefiguration of Christ's victory over sin and death. The Israelites faced walled cities and mighty warriors, yet God commanded courage. So too, in our battles against despair, illness, or the tempests of doubt, we are called to stand firm. Saint Basil the Great, in his ascetical writings, warns that fear arises from forgetfulness of God's providence. 'Remember the Red Sea parted,' he might say, 'and the manna from heaven—shall He not provide now?'
My children, let this verse be your shield. In the arena of life, where lions roar and arrows fly, echo the words of Saint Gregory of Nyssa: 'Fear is the offspring of unbelief; cast it out by clinging to the Rock.' Draw near to the Eucharist, that heavenly banquet, and let its grace fortify your hearts. Fear not the opinions of men, the uncertainties of tomorrow, or the whispers of the evil one. For as Saint Ambrose expounds, God who led Israel through the desert leads us to the promised land of eternal rest.
Go forth, then, with boldness. Let your lives proclaim this truth: in Christ, there is no room for dread. May the peace of the Lord be with you always.
