Verse #082 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the eternal Word, I, your humble servant echoing the voices of the ancients, bid you heed the prophet's clarion call: 'Fear them not...' Thus speaks Jeremiah in the tenth chapter, verse five, unveiling the folly of idols that stand as mere scarecrows in the field—lifeless, speechless, powerless to harm or help.
Oh, how the Early Fathers rejoiced in this truth! Hear Jerome, that vigilant guardian of Scripture, who in his commentary on Jeremiah exposes these false gods as 'upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go.' They are but wood and stone, fashioned by human hands, devoid of breath or spirit. Fear them not, for they are shadows fleeing before the light of the One True God!
Augustine, in his profound Confessions, reminds us that the soul, ensnared by such vanities, wanders far from the Creator. 'You have made us for Yourself, O Lord,' he cries, 'and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.' Why then tremble before these impotent effigies? They cannot walk, cannot speak—mere burdens to be carried, as Chrysostom thunders in his homilies against the pagans: 'What madness to adore that which must be borne upon shoulders, while the Almighty bears the universe in His hand!'
From the Catena Aurea, though it graces the Gospels, we draw the golden chain of patristic wisdom: as Gregory the Great teaches on false fears, so too here—the idols of our age, be they wealth, power, or fleeting pleasures, are but echoes of ancient deceptions. Bede the Venerable, in his expositions, urges us to contrast these with the living God who walks among us, speaks in the whisper of conscience, and carries our burdens upon the Cross.
My children, in this unplugged hour, let us unplug from the world's illusions. Fear not the scarecrows that loom in your trials—the doubts, the persecutions, the tempests of life. For as Origen beheld, the soul enlightened by Christ sees through the veil: these idols crumble like dust before the wind of the Spirit.
Stand firm, then, in the faith of our Fathers. Let your hearts be altars to the Living God, not shrines to fleeting fears. Fear them not, for He who conquered death bids you rise in courage. Go forth, emboldened by grace, to live as beacons in a shadowed world.
