Beloved brethren, gathered in the shadow of the eternal Light, hear ye the words of the wise Solomon, inscribed in the sacred scrolls of Proverbs: '...but the righteous sing and rejoice.' (29:6) Ah, what profound mystery is unveiled herein! In this vale of tears, where the wicked ensnare themselves in the toils of transgression, the just man—rooted in the fear of the Lord—bursts forth in melody and exultation. As I, your humble servant, stand before you like the Fathers of old, let us delve into this divine utterance, drawing from the golden chain of patristic wisdom, the Catena Aurea of our forebears. Consider, dear ones, how Saint John Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed herald, expounds upon the joys of virtue. In his homilies on the Psalms, he likens the righteous soul to a harp strung by the Spirit, resonating with heavenly harmonies amid earthly tempests. 'The just,' he declares, 'rejoice not in fleeting pleasures, but in the unshakeable peace of God, which surpasseth understanding.' Aye, for the snares that bind the sinner—pride, envy, lust—become for the righteous but stepping stones to jubilation. The Catena reminds us of Origen's insight: the righteous sing because their hearts are attuned to the celestial choir, echoing the angelic 'Holy, Holy, Holy' even in tribulation. And what of Saint Augustine, the eagle of Hippo? In his Confessions, he recounts his own deliverance from the nets of sin, crying out, 'Late have I loved Thee, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new!' The righteous rejoice, he teaches, for they have tasted the sweetness of divine grace, a foretaste of the eternal banquet. Brethren, in this age of shadows, where tyrants rage and tempests howl, let not your hearts be troubled. The righteous sing, for their joy is not of this world—it flows from the font of living water, Christ Himself. As Saint Basil the Great affirms in his ascetical writings, 'The just man rejoices in adversity, for he sees therein the hand of Providence, molding him for glory.' Oh, my flock, emulate the martyrs who sang hymns in the arena, the confessors who rejoiced in chains! Let your lives be a ceaseless canticle, defying the gloom. For in righteousness, we partake of God's own bliss, as Gregory of Nyssa elucidates: 'The soul aligned with virtue ascends to the divine, where sorrow flees and joy reigns eternal.' Thus, fear not the snares of the evil one; sing and rejoice, for the Lord is your strength! #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #159of220 #Catholic
