Verse #135 of 220
Dear friends in Christ, as we continue our journey through #FearNot220, let's pause and reflect on verse #135 from Romans 8:15: "...you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear..." What a powerful reminder of the freedom we've been granted through our adoption as children of God!
In a world that often bombards us with reasons to be afraid—uncertainties about the future, personal struggles, or global challenges—it's easy to slip back into a mindset of fear. But St. Paul assures us that the Spirit we have received is not one that binds us in chains of dread. Instead, it's the Spirit of sonship, crying out "Abba, Father!" This verse invites us to embrace our true identity: beloved sons and daughters of a loving God who has liberated us from the slavery of sin and fear.
Drawing from the wisdom of the Early Church Fathers, we find profound insights that illuminate this truth. St. Augustine, in his Confessions, speaks of the human heart's restlessness until it rests in God. He reminds us that fear arises when we place our trust in fleeting things rather than in the eternal Father. By contrast, the Spirit we receive empowers us to live in confident hope, free from the paralyzing grip of anxiety. Augustine encourages us: "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you." Let this be our anchor—resting in God's embrace dispels the shadows of fear.
Similarly, St. John Chrysostom, in his homilies on Romans, emphasizes the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. He teaches that the "spirit of slavery" refers to the old covenant of law, which bred fear through condemnation. But now, under grace, we are adopted heirs, co-heirs with Christ. Chrysostom urges believers to live boldly, saying, "Let us not then be slaves to fear, but sons in freedom." His words balance the call to vigilance with the joy of liberation, reminding us that while we must guard against sin, we do so not in terror but in filial love.
And let's not forget St. Basil the Great, who in his writings on the Holy Spirit highlights how this divine gift fosters courage and peace. Basil notes that the Spirit frees us from the "bondage of corruption," enabling us to face trials with fortitude. He draws a balanced view: fear can be a healthy respect for God (as in the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom), but it should never enslave us. Instead, the Spirit cultivates a reverent awe that leads to bold faith.
Beloved, today, let's choose to live in this freedom. When fear whispers doubts, remember your adoption. Cry out to Abba, and let His Spirit fill you with peace that surpasses understanding. You're not a slave to fear—you're a child of the King! Share this encouragement with someone who needs it, and let's build each other up in faith.
