Verse #014 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the eternal Word, I, your humble servant, speak to you as one of the ancient fathers, drawing from the wellspring of divine wisdom. Hearken to the voice of the Lord in Deuteronomy: 'Do not be afraid of him...' (3:2). These words, spoken to Moses as he faced the giant Og, king of Bashan, echo through the ages, a clarion call against the tyranny of fear.
In the Catena Aurea, our blessed Thomas compiles the insights of the Fathers on the Scriptures, reminding us how the Old Testament prefigures the victories of Christ. As Chrysostom teaches on similar passages, fear is the chain that binds the soul, forged by the enemy to hinder our march toward the Promised Land. Yet, God Himself shatters it! Behold Moses, trembling before Og's mighty stature—thirty cubits of terror, a wall of flesh and iron. But the Lord says, 'Fear not,' for He has already delivered the foe into our hands.
Augustine, in his homilies, expounds how this foreshadows our battle against spiritual giants—the passions, the principalities of darkness. 'What is Og but the embodiment of worldly power?' he might ask. 'And what is our fear but forgetfulness of God's omnipotence?' Brethren, in the early Church, we faced lions in arenas, emperors' decrees, and the whispers of heresy. Yet, like Basil the Great, we proclaimed: 'The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?' (Psalm 27:1).
Oh, how warm is the embrace of divine assurance! In these unplugged moments, away from the clamor of the world, let us meditate deeply. Fear not the 'him' in your life—be it illness, loss, or the unknown abyss. As Origen reflects in his commentaries, the giants of old symbolize the obstacles to virtue; but Christ, the true Moses, leads us through the Red Sea of trials, drowning our pharaohs of doubt.
Powerful is this truth: God does not merely encourage; He acts. He has given the victory beforehand. Gregory of Nyssa urges us to ascend the mountain of faith, leaving fear in the valleys below. Timeless is this message, for every age faces its Og—yet every age hears God's whisper: 'Do not be afraid.'
Let us, then, arm ourselves with prayer, the sacraments, and the fellowship of saints. March forward, beloved, into the land flowing with milk and honey, which is the kingdom within.
