Verse #028 of 220
Beloved brethren, gathered in the shadow of the Almighty, hearken unto these words from the sacred scrolls of Judges, chapter six, verse twenty-three: 'Be calm, do not fear. You shall not die.' Thus spake the Lord unto Gideon, that valiant soul trembling in the threshing floor, amidst the oppression of Midian.
Oh, how like unto us was Gideon! Called from obscurity, he beheld the Angel of the Lord, and in that divine encounter, fear gripped his heart. For who among mortals can gaze upon the holy and not quake? As the blessed Origen expounds in his homilies, Gideon typifies the faithful soul awakened to God's presence, yet assailed by dread of judgment. 'The vision of the divine,' Origen teaches, 'stirs the conscience, but the voice of mercy dispels the terror.' Indeed, the Lord did not leave Gideon in his fear; nay, He proclaimed peace—shalom, that wholeness which mends the fractured spirit.
Draw we now from the golden chain of the Fathers, as compiled in the Catena Aurea, though our verse hails from the Judges, its echo resounds in the Gospels. Saint Augustine, in his tracts on John, likens such divine assurances to Christ's words: 'Peace I leave with you.' Fear not death, for in God, death is but a shadow. 'The body may perish,' Augustine declares, 'but the soul abides in eternal life.' And Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed orator, urges us: 'Let not the storms of life dismay thee; the Master of the winds commands calm.' In this unplugged hour, stripped of worldly clamor, let us heed these ancients.
My children, in your own threshing floors—be they the trials of sickness, the Midianites of doubt, or the oppressions of this age—hear the Lord's whisper: Be calm. Do not fear. You shall not die. For Christ, the true Gideon, has conquered death itself. As Jerome comments on the prophets, such promises foreshadow the Resurrection, where fear is swallowed up in victory.
Rise, then, with hearts emboldened! Cast off the chains of anxiety, for God's peace guards your souls. In fasting and prayer, in the sacraments of our holy Mother Church, find this calm. Fear not the night; the Dawn from on high has visited us.
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
