Verse #060 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the eternal Light, let us turn our hearts to the sacred words of the Psalmist: 'You shall not fear the terror of the night...' (Psalm 91:5). Ah, what profound consolation flows from this divine promise! As I, your humble servant echoing the voices of the ancient Fathers, stand before you like Chrysostom in his golden-tongued homilies or Augustine in his confessions of faith, I beseech you to heed this timeless truth.
In the Catena Aurea, we find the blessed Thomas Aquinas weaving together the insights of the saints. Jerome teaches that the 'terror of the night' signifies those hidden snares of the evil one, which creep upon us in moments of darkness—be it the literal gloom of evening or the spiritual obscurity of doubt and temptation. Yet, fear not! For the Lord, our refuge and fortress, as Origen so eloquently expounds, shields us with His mighty wings, just as a mother hen gathers her chicks.
Consider, my dear ones, the words of Basil the Great: 'The night terrors are the whispers of despair, the arrows of affliction that fly by day are the trials of life.' But in Christ, we are armored with faith. Gregory of Nyssa reminds us that this Psalm is a hymn of divine protection, where God commands His angels to guard us in all our ways. Do we not see this in the lives of the martyrs? Polycarp faced the flames without fear, for he trusted in Him who conquers the night.
Oh, how the world assails us with fears—fears of loss, of sickness, of the unknown morrow! Yet, as Cyril of Alexandria urges, let us dwell in the secret place of the Most High. There, in prayer and sacrament, we find peace that surpasses understanding. The terror of the night may howl like a tempest, but our souls, anchored in God's love, remain unshaken.
Beloved, in this unplugged hour, unplug from the clamor of worldly anxieties. Embrace the silence where God's voice whispers, 'Fear not.' Let this verse be your nightly prayer, your daily shield. For He who watches over Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. Arise, then, with hearts aflame, and walk boldly into the light of His eternal day!
