Verse #009 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of eternity, I, your humble servant echoing the voices of the ancients, speak to you as one of the Fathers of old—perhaps like Gregory the Theologian or the golden-mouthed Chrysostom—standing at this sacred pulpit to unfold the mysteries of Holy Writ. Hearken now to the words of the divine Lawgiver Moses, as recorded in the Book of Exodus, chapter twenty, verse twenty: 'Do not be afraid, for God has come to you only to test you...'
Oh, my dear children, what thunderous grace resounds in these words! Recall the scene upon Mount Sinai, where the Almighty descended in fire and smoke, shaking the very foundations of the earth. The people trembled, for the presence of God is no trifling matter—it pierces the soul like a two-edged sword. Yet Moses, that faithful prophet, bids them: Fear not! For this divine visitation is not to destroy, but to prove, to refine as gold in the furnace.
Draw we now from the rich treasury of the Catena Aurea, that golden chain compiled by the Angelic Doctor Thomas, though it chiefly adorns the Gospels, its spirit illumines all Scripture. The Fathers teach us that God's tests are mercies veiled. As Augustine expounds in his sermons on the Psalms, 'God tests us not to know us— for He knows all—but that we may know ourselves, and in knowing, turn more fervently to Him.' Behold, the Israelites at Sinai were tested in their faith, that they might learn obedience and trust, emerging not as slaves of fear, but as children of the covenant.
Jerome, that learned translator of the sacred texts, reminds us in his commentaries that such trials are the school of virtue. 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,' he writes, yet it is not a servile fear that paralyzes, but a filial awe that liberates. And Origen, in his profound homilies, sees in this testing a foretaste of the Incarnation—God coming near not to terrify, but to transform. For just as the Law tested Israel, so Christ tests us in the trials of life, that we might be conformed to His image.
My brethren, in this age of shadows and uncertainties, when fears assail us like tempests—be it the storms of persecution, the whispers of doubt, or the burdens of daily toil—remember Sinai. God comes to test you, not to crush, but to crown. He draws near in the Eucharist, in prayer, in the quiet of your heart, saying: Fear not! For in the test, grace abounds. As Chrysostom urges, 'Let us not flee the trial, but embrace it, for therein lies our salvation.'
Stand firm, then, O faithful ones! Let your hearts be warmed by the fire of divine love, powerful in its gentleness, timeless as the eternal Word. For God tests that He may bless, refines that He may glorify. Go forth, fearless in His promise, and live as tested gold, shining for the Kingdom.
