Verse #152 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the eternal Light, hear the words of the Psalmist echoing through the ages: 'Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!' (Psalm 32:11). Ah, what a divine summons this is, my children, not from the fleeting winds of this world, but from the very throne of grace! As I, your humble servant in the tradition of the early Church, stand before you like those venerable Fathers of old—Augustine, Chrysostom, and the golden chain of the Catena Aurea—let us delve into this sacred verse, drawing from the wellspring of patristic wisdom to nourish our souls.
Consider, dear ones, how the blessed Augustine, in his Expositions on the Psalms, teaches us that this gladness is no mere earthly merriment, but a profound joy rooted in the forgiveness of sins. For Psalm 32 speaks of the blessed man whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 'Be glad in the LORD,' he exhorts, for it is in Him alone that our righteousness finds its source—not in our feeble works, but in the mercy poured out through the Cross. The Catena Aurea, that treasury compiled by the angelic Thomas Aquinas, echoes Jerome's insight: the righteous rejoice because they have been justified by faith, their hearts upright not by human striving, but by divine adoption. Oh, how Chrysostom, the golden-mouthed, would thunder from his pulpit in Antioch, reminding us that this rejoicing is a weapon against despair! In times of trial—be it the persecutions of emperors or the tempests of our inner doubts—we are called to shout for joy, for the LORD is our refuge, our exceeding great reward.
Yet, let us not mistake this for idle cheer. The upright in heart, as Bede the Venerable notes in his commentaries, are those who walk in integrity, their lives a living sacrifice. In this unplugged hour, away from the clamor of the world, let us unplug from the illusions of self-sufficiency and plug into the vine of Christ. Rejoice, O righteous! For even in sorrow, as Gregory the Great affirms, our joy is perfected in hope—the hope of resurrection, the hope of eternal communion with the saints.
My brethren, in this age as in the days of the martyrs, the world bids us fear, but the LORD commands us to rejoice. Let your hearts be stirred; let your voices rise in praise. For in gladness we find strength, in rejoicing we taste heaven. Go forth, then, and live this verse: be glad in the LORD, and let your upright hearts overflow with joy everlasting.
