Verse #050 of 220

Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the martyrs' witness, I, your humble servant, speak to you as one echoing the voices of the ancients. Hearken to the words of sacred Scripture, drawn from the Second Book of Maccabees, chapter eight, verse sixteen: '...nor to fear the large number...' Ah, what a clarion call to the faithful soul! In this verse, the valiant Judas Maccabeus exhorts his outnumbered band, not to tremble before the vast hordes of enemies, but to trust in the Almighty who fights for His people. Let us delve deeply, as the great Fathers of the Church have taught us. Recall how Saint Ambrose, in his treatise on the duties of the clergy, reminds us that true courage springs not from human strength, but from divine grace. 'For what is the multitude of foes,' he writes, 'when the Lord is our shield?' Indeed, brethren, the Catena Aurea, that golden chain of patristic wisdom compiled by the Angelic Doctor Thomas Aquinas, though chiefly on the Gospels, illumines similar themes in our Lord's own words. As when Christ says in Matthew, 'Fear not them which kill the body,' drawing from Chrysostom's homilies: 'The fear of God casts out the fear of man, for His power dwarfs all earthly armies.' Imagine, my dear ones, the scene: Judas, with but seven thousand, faces a sea of adversaries. Yet he bids them fear not the 'large number.' Why? Because, as Saint Augustine expounds in his Confessions, 'Thou, O Lord, art my hope; Thou hast set me on high.' The saint, reflecting on the Psalms, teaches that numbers avail nothing against the One who numbers the stars. Tertullian, that fiery African Father, in his Apology, mocks the pagans' reliance on legions, saying, 'We are but yesterday, and we have filled every place among you—cities, islands, fortresses... We leave you your temples empty.' See how the early Church, outnumbered and persecuted, conquered not by sword, but by faith! O timeless truth! In our own days, do we not face multitudes—of doubts, temptations, worldly pressures? The culture assails us with its vast arrays of distraction and disbelief. Yet, fear not! As Origen counsels in his commentaries, 'The soul armed with virtue stands against myriads.' Let us, like the Maccabees, arm ourselves not with spear and shield, but with prayer, fasting, and the sacraments. Saint Basil the Great, in his homilies on the Psalms, urges: 'Let not the enemy's host dismay thee; God's host encamps around those who fear Him.' Beloved, this is no cold doctrine, but a warm embrace from the Father. In the Eucharist, we partake of the strength that toppled empires. Remember Gregory of Nyssa's words: 'The divine power makes the weak strong, turning the few into conquerors.' So, when fearsome numbers loom—be it in personal trials, societal upheavals, or spiritual battles—recall Judas's exhortation. Fear not the large number, for God is with us! Let this homily stir your hearts to valor. Go forth, fortified by the ancients' wisdom, and live fearlessly in Christ's love. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #050of220 #Catholic
