Verse #092 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the eternal Word, I, your humble servant echoing the voices of the ancients, beseech you to heed the divine oracle given to the prophet Ezekiel. For thus saith the Lord: '...fear neither them nor their words...' (Ezekiel 2:6). Ah, what a clarion call to courage amidst the briars and scorpions of this rebellious age!
Let us delve into the sacred text, drawing from the golden chain of our holy Fathers, as compiled in the Catena Aurea and beyond. Saint Jerome, that vigilant interpreter of Scripture, reminds us in his Commentary on Ezekiel that the prophet is sent to a 'rebellious house,' surrounded by thorns and scorpions—symbols not merely of physical peril, but of the stinging words and venomous opposition of the ungodly. Ezekiel, like a lamb among wolves, is fortified by God's command: fear not their faces, nor be dismayed at their words, though they be as briars that prick and scorpions that sting.
Origen, in his profound homilies, teaches that these thorns represent the entanglements of worldly cares, which seek to ensnare the soul proclaiming truth. Yet, the divine injunction is clear: fear them not! For the Lord who calls is the Lord who strengthens. As Saint John Chrysostom exhorts in his discourses on fortitude, the Christian soul must stand unmoved, like a rock amidst tempests, for the words of men are but fleeting winds, while the Word of God endures forever.
My dear children, in this unplugged hour of reflection, consider how this verse resonates through the ages. In the early Church, our forebears faced the sneers of pagans, the edicts of emperors, the betrayals of false brethren. Saint Augustine, in his Confessions, speaks of the fear that once gripped his heart before the world's scorn, yet grace transformed it into bold proclamation. So too, in our day, when voices rise against the faith—mocking, accusing, threatening—remember Ezekiel's charge. Fear not their words! They are but echoes in the vastness of eternity.
For what are words against the Almighty? As Saint Gregory the Great notes in his Moralia, the just man, armed with divine fear, despises human terror. Let this be your armor: a heart aflame with love for God, which quenches the fiery darts of malice. Stand firm, O faithful! Proclaim the Gospel without timidity, for He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
Go forth, then, with the prophet's zeal. Let not the thorns deter you, nor the scorpions affright. The Lord is your shield, your exceeding great reward. Amen.
