Verse #205 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the apostles, let us turn our hearts to the wisdom of Sirach, that ancient voice echoing from the sacred scrolls: 'You who fear the Lord, hope for good things... be glad...' (Sirach 2:9). Ah, what a profound exhortation this is, my children! In these words, we are called not to a servile dread, but to that holy fear which is the beginning of wisdom, as the Psalmist sings. For the fear of the Lord is no terror that paralyzes, but a reverent awe that awakens the soul to hope.
Draw near, and let us drink from the wellspring of the Fathers. Saint Augustine, in his luminous Confessions, teaches us that true hope springs from the fear of God, for it is in acknowledging His majesty that we cast off the chains of worldly despair. 'Thou hast made us for Thyself, O Lord,' he cries, 'and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.' So too, in the Catena Aurea, compiled by the angelic Doctor Thomas, we find the golden chain of patristic wisdom on hope's sister virtues. Though Sirach speaks not directly of the Gospels, the Fathers illumine similar truths: Saint John Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed preacher, urges us in his homilies on Matthew to hope amidst trials, for 'the fear of the Lord is hope's foundation, turning sorrow into gladness.' He reminds us of the publican, who in humble fear approached the altar and departed justified, his heart gladdened by mercy.
Consider, dear ones, the martyrs of old—Polycarp, Ignatius, those lions of the faith. They feared not the emperor's sword but the Lord alone, and in that fear, they hoped for eternal good, their faces radiant with gladness even in the arena. Saint Basil the Great, in his ascetical writings, echoes this: 'The fear of God begets hope, and hope begets joy, for the Lord delights in those who trust Him.' Is this not the timeless rhythm of the Christian life? In our age, as in theirs, tempests rage—doubts assail, sorrows weigh heavy. Yet, fear the Lord, and hope! Hope for the good things He promises: peace that surpasses understanding, grace that redeems, the banquet of heaven where every tear is wiped away.
Oh, be glad, my flock! Let not the shadows of this world dim your light. As Saint Jerome expounds in his commentaries, drawing from the wisdom books, gladness is the fruit of holy fear, a foretaste of paradise. Rise, then, and live this verse. Fear Him in love, hope in His promises, and let your souls dance in gladness. For the Lord is faithful; He who began the good work in you will bring it to completion.
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
