Verse #143 of 220

Beloved brethren, gathered in the shadow of the martyrs' witness, hear these words from the Apocalypse of John, that divine revelation granted to the beloved disciple: 'Do not be afraid of anything that you are going to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life' (Revelation 2:10). Oh, my children, in these perilous times, when the tempests of persecution rage and the shadows of suffering loom, let us draw strength from the wisdom of our holy fathers. As the great Chrysostom teaches in his homilies, echoing the spirit of the Catena Aurea, suffering is not a curse but a refining fire, purifying the soul as gold in the furnace. For did not the Lord Himself endure the cross for our sake? Victorinus, that venerable bishop of old, in his commentary on this very Apocalypse, reminds us that the 'ten days' signify a brief trial, a momentary affliction compared to the eternal glory that awaits. Fear not, then, the prison bars or the tyrant's decree, for they are but the devil's futile chains, soon to be shattered by divine grace. Consider the words of Augustine, the luminous doctor of Hippo, who in his tracts expounds how the faithful, like the church at Smyrna, are exhorted to endurance. 'The crown of life,' he says, is promised not to the faint-hearted, but to those who persevere, drawing from the wellspring of Christ's own fortitude. And Origen, that profound interpreter, urges us to see in these sufferings a participation in the paschal mystery, where death gives way to resurrection. Beloved, in our own age, whether assailed by worldly trials, inner doubts, or the snares of the evil one, let this be our anchor: God tests us not to destroy, but to crown. I beseech you, as did the fathers before me—Ignatius, Polycarp, those who faced the arenas with hymns on their lips—embrace the cross with joy. For the Lord speaks through John: 'Be faithful unto death.' What is death to us but the gateway to life eternal? Let your hearts be warmed by the fire of the Spirit, powerful in its consolation, timeless in its truth. Suffer well, O faithful ones, and inherit the kingdom prepared from the foundation of the world. In this unplugged reflection, stripped of modern distractions, let us return to the pure font of apostolic teaching. Fear not the sufferings to come; they are the path to glory. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #143of220 #Catholic
