Verse #125 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the martyrs' witness, hear the words of our Lord Jesus: 'I say to you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do' (Luke 12:4). Oh, what divine counsel from the lips of the Eternal Word! In this exhortation, He bids us cast off the chains of earthly terror, for what is the slaying of the flesh compared to the peril of the soul?
As the golden chain of the Catena Aurea unfolds, we turn to the wisdom of the Fathers. Saint Cyril of Alexandria, that pillar of orthodoxy, teaches us: 'Fear not the persecutors who can only harm the body; rather, fear Him who can cast both soul and body into Gehenna.' Yes, brethren, our Savior contrasts the fleeting power of men with the eternal authority of God. The tyrant may wield the sword, but it touches only the mortal coil; God alone judges the immortal spirit.
Echoing this, the blessed Chrysostom, with his tongue of fire, declares: 'Let us not tremble at death, for it is but the gate to life everlasting. The body perishes, but the soul endures.' In the arenas of Rome, did not our forebears face lions and flames with songs of praise? Ignatius of Antioch, bound for martyrdom, wrote: 'I am the wheat of God, ground by the teeth of beasts to become pure bread for Christ.' Such courage springs from this very verse—fear not those who kill the body!
And Augustine, the doctor of grace, reminds us: 'The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.' In times of trial, when emperors decree against the faith, or when whispers of apostasy tempt the weak, remember: the body is a tent, soon folded; the soul, a temple eternal. Why dread the executioner's axe when heaven's crown awaits?
My children, in this unplugged hour, unplug from the world's clamor. The fears of our age—persecution veiled as progress, the subtle tyrannies of opinion—pale before God's sovereignty. Fear Him who numbers the hairs of your head, who values you above sparrows. Live boldly, proclaim the Gospel without compromise, for after the body is slain, what more can foes do? But God can exalt or condemn forever.
Let this truth warm your hearts like the hearth of a faithful home. Be powerful in prayer, timeless in fidelity. Fear not, for Christ has overcome the world!
