Verse #173 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the apostles' teachings, let us turn our hearts to the words of our Lord as recorded by the blessed Luke: '...do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.' (Luke 10:20) Ah, what profound wisdom from the lips of the Eternal Word! As I, your humble servant echoing the voices of the Fathers, stand before you like Chrysostom in his golden-mouthed homilies, I bid you ponder this mystery.
Recall, dear ones, the seventy-two sent forth by Jesus, lambs amid wolves, armed not with swords but with the power of His name. They returned exultant, marveling that even demons bowed before them. Yet our Lord, in His divine humility, redirects their joy. Why? As the Catena Aurea teaches us through the words of Cyril of Alexandria, it is not the subjection of spirits that should stir our souls, for such power is but a gift, fleeting and subordinate to greater graces. Nay, rejoice in the inscription of your names in the heavenly ledger, that eternal registry of the saved!
The venerable Bede, in his commentaries compiled by Aquinas, reminds us that this heavenly writing is the mark of predestined glory, inscribed not by human hand but by the finger of God, as on the tablets of Moses. Augustine, that luminous doctor, expounds further: our true exultation lies not in miraculous deeds, which even the wicked may perform, but in the salvation wrought by grace. For what profit is it to command demons if one's soul is not anchored in heaven? Theophylact echoes this, warning against pride in spiritual gifts, lest we fall like Lucifer, who rejoiced in his own splendor and was cast down.
O faithful, in this age of trials, where charlatans boast of signs and wonders, heed the Lord's counsel! Let not your hearts swell with vain triumphs over earthly foes—be they passions, temptations, or the whispers of the evil one. Instead, warm your spirits at the fire of divine love, rejoicing that through baptism and faith, your names are etched in the Book of Life. This is the unshakeable joy, timeless as the Church herself, powerful enough to sustain martyrs and confessors through ages of persecution.
My children, examine your consciences: Where does your rejoicing lie? In fleeting victories or in the promise of eternal communion with the saints? Turn from lesser delights and embrace this heavenly inscription. For as Gregory the Great teaches, true power is humility before God, and true joy is citizenship in the New Jerusalem.
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ enkindle this truth in your hearts. Amen.
