Verse #018 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the holy altar, let us turn our hearts to the sacred words of Moses, the great lawgiver, as recorded in Deuteronomy: '...do not be afraid of them...' (Deuteronomy 20:1). Ah, what a divine exhortation echoes through the ages! When thou goest forth to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses and chariots, and a people more numerous than thyself, be not afraid of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
In this verse, my dear children, we behold not merely a command for ancient Israel, but a timeless trumpet-call to all who wage war against the principalities of darkness. As the blessed Augustine teaches in his expositions, drawing from the well of divine wisdom, the horses and chariots symbolize the proud might of worldly powers, yet they are as chaff before the wind when God is our ally. 'Fear not,' he urges, 'for the battle is the Lord's.'
Recall the Catena Aurea, that golden chain of patristic insight compiled by the angelic Doctor Thomas, where, though focused on the Gospels, we find echoes in the commentaries on spiritual warfare. Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed orator, likens this to our Lord's words in the Gospel: 'Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul' (Matthew 10:28). The enemies of old—Pharaoh's hosts, the Canaanite kings—prefigure the invisible foes we face: sin, temptation, and the adversary himself. Origen, in his profound allegories, sees the exodus from Egypt as our liberation from the bondage of vice, and the battles ahead as the soul's ascent to virtue, fortified by divine grace.
O faithful ones, in these troubled times, when the world assails us with fears—be they of persecution, illness, or the tumults of nations—let us remember the God who parted the seas and felled Goliath with a shepherd's sling. Jerome, in his letters, reminds us that 'the Lord is our strength and our shield; in Him our hearts trust.' Do not cower before the multitude of chariots, for one with God is a majority. As Basil the Great exhorts in his homilies, cultivate courage through prayer and the sacraments, for the Eucharist is our manna in the wilderness of battle.
Let this truth warm your souls: God, who delivered Israel, dwells in us through Christ, the true Conqueror. Fear not the storm, for He who calmed the seas walks with you. Stand firm, beloved, and let your faith be your victory.
