Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of eternity, hear the voice of Moses echoing through the ages: 'Have no dread or fear of them' (Deuteronomy 1:29). Ah, what words of divine consolation! As I, your humble servant echoing the wisdom of the ancients, stand before you like those early shepherds of the flock—Chrysostom with his golden mouth, Augustine with his heart aflame—let us delve into this sacred utterance, drawn from the wellspring of the Catena Aurea and the Fathers who illumined the Scriptures. Consider, my children, the Israelites trembling at the borders of the Promised Land. Giants loomed, cities fortified like iron bastions, and fear gripped their souls like a serpent's coil. Yet Moses, that prophet of old, bids them: Fear not! For the Lord your God goes before you. As St. Jerome teaches in his commentaries, this is no mere human exhortation but a divine imperative, rooted in the covenant of grace. The Catena Aurea, compiling the lights of Origen and Bede, reminds us how such fears mirror our own spiritual battles—against the 'giants' of sin, doubt, and worldly terror. Oh, how the Early Fathers expound this! St. John Chrysostom, in his homilies on the Old Testament shadows fulfilled in Christ, urges us: 'Fear is the thief that robs faith of its vigor.' Just as the spies' report sowed dread among the people, so too do the whispers of the evil one sow discord in our hearts. But behold, the Lord who parted the seas parts our fears! St. Augustine, in his Confessions, reflects on divine providence: 'Thou hast made us for Thyself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless till they rest in Thee.' In this verse, we see the antidote to unrest—unwavering trust in Him who fights for us. Brethren, in these turbulent times, when shadows of uncertainty loom like ancient Anakim, let us not dread. The Fathers teach us to arm ourselves with prayer, as St. Basil exhorts in his ascetic writings: 'Let fear be banished by the remembrance of God's mighty acts.' Recall the martyrs, who faced lions and flames without dread, for they knew the Lord was their shield. So too, in our daily pilgrimages—be it illness, loss, or the tempests of life—let this word resound: Have no dread! Warm your hearts, then, with this timeless truth. God, who led Israel through the wilderness, leads us through our own. Fear not the 'them'—the obstacles, the adversaries, the unknowns—for He is with us, Emmanuel. As St. Gregory the Great moralizes in his homilies, drawing from the Catena's chain of wisdom: 'True courage is born of divine love, which casts out all fear.' Go forth, beloved, emboldened by this sacred charge. Let faith be your banner, and dread shall flee like mist before the sun. Amen. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #013of220 #Catholic
