Verse #048 of 220

Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the eternal Word, I, your humble servant, speak to you as one echoing the voices of the ancients. Hearken to the sacred verse from the Book of Maccabees: 'Do not be afraid of their numbers...' (1 Maccabees 4:8). Ah, what timeless wisdom rings forth from Judas Maccabeus, that valiant warrior of old, facing the vast hordes of the enemy with but a faithful remnant! In the Catena Aurea, our blessed Thomas compiles the golden chains of the Fathers, reminding us how the saints of yore drew strength from divine promises. Though this verse hails not from the Gospels, its spirit aligns with the commentaries on Matthew, where Chrysostom expounds on the mustard seed of faith that moves mountains. 'Fear not the multitude,' says Judas, for is it not the Lord who fights our battles? As Origen teaches in his homilies, the true enemy is not flesh and blood, but the principalities of darkness. Yet, even against earthly foes, God's arm is outstretched. Recall, dear ones, the words of Augustine in his Confessions: 'Thou hast made us for Thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in Thee.' In the face of overwhelming odds—be it the pagan armies besieging the faithful, or the tempests of doubt assailing our souls—let us rest not in our own strength, but in His. Basil the Great, in his exhortations, bids us remember the three youths in the fiery furnace, unafraid of the king's decree, for God was their shield. So too, Judas urges his men: numbers avail nothing against the Almighty. O, how this truth pierces the heart! In our age, as in theirs, we confront giants—persecutions, heresies, the clamor of the world. But fear not! As Gregory of Nyssa illuminates in his Life of Moses, the path through the Red Sea parts not by human might, but by trust in the Divine. Let your faith be the spark that ignites the heavens. Stand firm, my children, for the Lord multiplies the few into a conquering host. In these unplugged moments, away from the din of modernity, let us meditate deeply: What 'numbers' daunt you today? The throngs of unbelief? The pressures of daily toil? Cast them aside! For as Ambrose declares, 'The grace of God is sufficient.' Go forth, emboldened, and let your lives proclaim this victory. May the peace of Christ dwell richly in you. Amen. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #048of220 #Catholic
