Verse #203 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the eternal Light, I, your humble servant echoing the voices of the ancients, bid you heed the sacred words of the Psalmist: 'Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing' (Psalm 100:1-2). Ah, what divine harmony resounds in these verses, calling us not to drudgery, but to a symphony of joy in the service of our King!
As the blessed Augustine teaches in his Expositions on the Psalms, this joyful noise is no mere clamor of the flesh, but the exultation of a soul redeemed, bursting forth like the dawn after night's gloom. 'Let your service be with gladness,' he exhorts, for the Lord delights not in sullen obedience, but in hearts aflame with love. Remember, dear ones, how the great Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed father, in his homilies draws from the Catena of wisdom: the service of God is a banquet, not a burden. Just as the Israelites sang amidst their exodus from bondage, so too must we, freed from sin's chains by the blood of the Lamb, approach His throne with melodies of gratitude.
In the Catena Aurea, compiled by the angelic Thomas, we find echoes of Origen, who likens this glad service to the angels' ceaseless praise—pure, unfeigned, eternal. Why, then, do we mortals hesitate? In a world shadowed by trials, where the tempter whispers despair, let us counter with the Psalmist's clarion call. Serve with gladness! For in joy we mirror the Trinity's own bliss: the Father rejoicing in creation, the Son in redemption, the Spirit in sanctification.
Oh, my children, think upon Basil the Great, who in his writings on the Psalms reminds us that true gladness springs from virtue, not fleeting pleasures. Has not Gregory of Nyssa taught that our noisy joy drowns out the din of worldly vanities? Let your lives be a living homily: in the marketplace, the fields, the quiet of your chambers—serve Him gladly. For as Jerome interprets, this service is worship itself, a foretaste of heavenly liturgy where every tear is turned to triumph.
Beloved, in these latter days, amid persecutions or peace, let not your hearts grow weary. Make that joyful noise! Serve with gladness unquenchable, for He who calls you is faithful. Thus shall you walk in the footsteps of the Fathers, drawing ever nearer to the beatific vision.
