Verse #147 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the eternal Word, let us turn our hearts to the sacred Scriptures, where the voice of God echoes through the ages. Today, we meditate upon the exhortation given to Joshua, that faithful servant of the Lord: '...be strong and courageous' (Joshua 1:18). Oh, how these words resound like thunder from Sinai, calling us not to worldly might, but to the unyielding fortitude of faith!
As the great Origen teaches in his homilies, drawing from the wellsprings of divine wisdom, Joshua is a type of our Lord Jesus Christ, leading the people into the promised land—not of earthly soil, but of heavenly inheritance. Just as Joshua was commanded to be strong in the face of giants and walled cities, so are we, the Church militant, bidden to stand firm against the principalities and powers of darkness. The Catena Aurea, that golden chain of patristic insight compiled by the angelic Doctor Thomas, reminds us through the words of Chrysostom: 'Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it in obedience to God's will.' Indeed, my children, when the Israelites pledged their loyalty to Joshua, saying, 'Whoever rebels against your commandment... shall be put to death. Only be strong and courageous,' they mirrored the fidelity we owe to Christ, our true Captain.
Consider the blessed Augustine, who in his Confessions pours out his soul: 'Thou hast made us for Thyself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.' In this restlessness, we find our strength—not in human prowess, but in divine grace. For what are the Jordan's floods or Jericho's walls compared to the tempests of sin that assail us? Be strong, then, in prayer; courageous in virtue. Let not the whispers of doubt erode your resolve, as Jerome warns in his commentaries: 'The soldier of Christ must arm himself with the shield of faith, lest the arrows of the wicked one pierce him.'
In these latter days, when shadows lengthen and trials multiply, remember the martyrs of old—Ignatius, Polycarp, who faced lions with songs of praise. They embodied this courage, not by their own power, but by the Spirit who fortifies the weak. So too, you, dear flock: in your daily crosses, in the quiet battles of the soul, be strong and courageous. God does not call the equipped; He equips the called.
Let us pray: O Lord, instill in us the valor of Joshua, that we may cross into Your eternal rest. Amen.
