Verse #066 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of eternity, I, your humble servant echoing the voices of the ancient Fathers, speak to you from the depths of sacred wisdom. Hearken to the words of the prophet Isaiah, chapter seven, verse four: '...do not fear; let not your courage fail...' Oh, what divine balm for the trembling soul! In this UNPLUGGED reflection, let us unplug from the clamor of the world and plug into the eternal current of God's unchanging love.
As the great Jerome teaches in his Commentary on Isaiah, these words were spoken to King Ahaz amidst the terrors of invading armies—Syria and Israel conspiring against Judah. Yet the Lord, through His prophet, commands not fear, but steadfastness. 'Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted,' as the fuller verse proclaims. Jerome reminds us that true courage flows not from human might, but from trust in the Almighty, who turns the hearts of kings like streams of water.
Draw near, my children, and let us drink from the Catena Aurea, that golden chain of patristic insight. Though compiled for the Gospels by the Angelic Doctor, its spirit illumines all Scripture. Saint John Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed preacher, would exhort us similarly in his homilies: Fear is the tyrant's whip, but faith is the shield of the saints. When the tempests of life rage—be they wars without or doubts within—remember the martyrs who faced lions with songs on their lips. Their courage failed not, for it was rooted in Christ, the Rock.
Augustine, in his Confessions, confesses how fear gripped his youthful heart until grace whispered, 'Why do you fear? I am with you.' So too, Origen in his homilies urges us to see Isaiah's prophecy as a foretaste of the Incarnation—the Virgin's Son, Emmanuel, God with us. What foe can prevail against such a Presence? In our modern age, besieged by digital distractions and societal upheavals, these words ring timeless: Do not fear the shadows; let not your courage fail before phantoms. God bids us stand firm, for He has overcome the world.
Beloved, in this #FearNot220 journey, unplug from anxiety's chains. Let Isaiah's call awaken the slumbering valor within. As Basil the Great taught, courage is the virtue that guards all others; without it, faith falters. Yet with it, we march as the early Church did—through persecutions to paradise. Fear not, for the Lord is your strength; let not your courage fail, for His promises endure.
May this homily kindle fire in your hearts, warming you through life's winters. Go forth, fearless in faith!
