Verse #040 of 220
Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the shadow of the eternal Word, let us turn our hearts to the sacred Scriptures, where the voice of God resounds through the ages. Today, we ponder the exhortation from the book of Nehemiah: 'Have no fear of them!' (Nehemiah 4:8, or as some render it in the spirit of verse 14). In the midst of rebuilding Jerusalem's walls, amidst plots and perils from adversaries, Nehemiah, that faithful servant, rallied the people with words of divine courage. Oh, how these words echo the timeless call to fortitude in the face of trial!
As I, your humble father in the faith—much like the blessed Origen or the golden-tongued Chrysostom—stand before you, I draw from the rich catena of our holy forebears. Recall how Saint Augustine, in his commentaries, speaks of fear as the chain that binds the soul, yet faith as the key that unlocks it. In the Catena Aurea, compiled by the angelic Doctor Thomas, we find the Fathers expounding on similar Gospel imperatives: 'Fear not, little flock,' says our Lord (Luke 12:32). Saint Cyril of Alexandria notes that such words dismantle the tyranny of dread, for the Almighty arms us with His presence. Just as Nehemiah armed his builders with swords in one hand and trowels in the other, so too does Christ equip us—with the sword of the Spirit and the trowel of good works—to rebuild the temple of our souls amid the ruins of this world.
Beloved, consider the trials of our early brethren: Saint Ignatius of Antioch, marching to martyrdom, wrote to the churches, urging them not to fear the beasts nor the emperors, for 'He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world' (1 John 4:4). Saint Jerome, in his letters, reminds us that the enemies of old—Sanballat and Tobiah—are but shadows of our spiritual foes: the world, the flesh, and the devil. Yet, as Saint Ambrose teaches in his homilies on the Psalms, 'The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?' (Psalm 27:1). Fear not the mockers, the tempters, the storms that rage! For God, who parted the seas for Moses and raised Lazarus from the tomb, stands as our bulwark.
In this unplugged hour, away from the clamor of modern distractions, let us unplug our hearts from anxiety and plug them into the vine of Christ. Nehemiah's people worked with vigilance, but their true strength lay in trust. So too, in our pilgrim journey, whether facing personal adversities, societal upheavals, or the subtle snares of doubt, we are called to rise. Saint Gregory the Great, in his Moral Reflections, warns that fear paralyzes, but love casts it out perfectly (1 John 4:18). Let us, then, arm ourselves with prayer, fortify our walls with sacraments, and advance with the joy of the redeemed.
Oh, dear ones, have no fear of them—of those who oppose the kingdom's building! The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, is with us. Let this truth warm your souls like the dawn after a long night. Stand firm, build boldly, and fear not—for victory is assured in Him who conquered death itself.
