Verse #146: 'Only be strong and very courageous... do not turn from it...' (Joshua 1:7)
Dear friends in Christ, as we meditate on these words from Joshua, spoken by God to His servant as he prepared to lead Israel into the Promised Land, we are reminded of the timeless call to spiritual fortitude. Joshua, successor to Moses, stood at the threshold of great trials—crossing the Jordan, conquering fortified cities, facing giants. Yet God's command was clear: Be strong and very courageous, not in human might, but in faithful obedience to the Law. Do not swerve from it to the right or left.
The Early Church Fathers saw in Joshua a profound type of Christ, our true Leader who guides us through the wilderness of sin into the heavenly homeland. Origen, in his Homilies on Joshua, interprets this verse as an exhortation to spiritual warfare. Just as Joshua was to meditate on the Law day and night, so we are called to immerse ourselves in Scripture, the living Word. Origen writes: 'The Law is a shadow of the good things to come' (cf. Heb 10:1), pointing to Christ. Our courage, then, is not mere bravado but a resolute adherence to divine truth amidst temptations that pull us left or right—toward legalism or license.
St. Augustine echoes this in his Confessions, reflecting on his own journey from wandering paths to the straight way of faith. He confesses how turning from God's law led to despair, but strength came through grace: 'You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.' For Augustine, Joshua's courage symbolizes the Christian's battle against the flesh, the world, and the devil. We must not deviate; even a slight turn can lead to ruin, as he warns in his sermons on the Psalms.
Jerome, the great translator of Scripture, in his letters, urges believers to emulate Joshua's vigilance. Commenting on this passage, he notes that true success—'that you may have good success wherever you go'—comes from unwavering fidelity. In an age of heresies, Jerome saw deviations as perilous as straying from the camp of Israel. Like Joshua circling Jericho, we encircle our vices with prayer and obedience until they fall.
Beloved, in our unplugged lives, disconnected from the noise of modernity, let us heed this call. The world tempts us to compromise, to turn aside for comfort or acclaim. But Christ, our Joshua, has conquered. St. John Chrysostom, in his homilies, exhorts: 'Let us be courageous in the face of trials, for God is with us.' Draw strength from the Eucharist, the new manna, and the sacraments, which fortify our souls.
Today, examine your path: Are you turning from God's law? Return, be strong, be courageous. For in obedience lies victory, and in Christ, our eternal rest. May the Holy Spirit grant us the grace to walk straight, unswerving, into the promises of God.
