Verse #139 of 220
Dear friends in Christ, as we journey through our #FearNot220 series, let us pause and reflect on verse #139: '...I will not be afraid...' from 1 Peter 3:6. In this beautiful exhortation, St. Peter draws our gaze to Sarah, the faithful wife of Abraham, who embodied trust in God's promises without succumbing to fear. She called Abraham her lord, not out of subservience, but from a deep well of reverence and faith, doing what was right even in the face of uncertainty. How often do we, like Sarah, stand at the crossroads of doubt and decision, tempted to let fear whisper lies into our hearts?
In the warm embrace of our Catholic faith, we find solace in the wisdom of the Early Church Fathers. St. Augustine, that luminous doctor of the Church, reminds us in his Confessions that fear arises when we cling too tightly to the temporal, forgetting the eternal love of God who holds us. 'You have made us for Yourself, O Lord,' he writes, 'and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.' Augustine's own life was a testament to this: plagued by inner turmoil and worldly fears, he discovered that true peace comes not from avoiding storms, but from anchoring our souls in Christ's unshakeable grace. Just as Sarah stepped forward in obedience, Augustine urges us to surrender our anxieties to the Divine Physician, who heals our fears with His merciful touch.
Think of your own life, beloved ones—a mother facing the unknowns of raising children in a chaotic world, a young professional navigating career pressures amid economic shifts, or an elder pondering the twilight years with health concerns. These are the gentle threads of our human tapestry, woven with moments where fear knocks at the door. Yet, in the quiet of prayer, perhaps before the Blessed Sacrament or with rosary in hand, we can whisper Sarah's resolve: 'I will not be afraid.' For our Lord Jesus, who calmed the seas and conquered death itself, walks beside us, turning our fears into fertile ground for faith.
Let this verse be a lantern in your daily walk. When shadows of worry creep in, recall Sarah's courage, Augustine's insight, and the endless mercy of our Heavenly Father. You are not alone; the saints intercede, the Church enfolds you, and God’s promises endure. Fear not, for He is with you always. Step boldly into His light, doing what is right, and watch fear flee before the dawn of His love. May the Holy Spirit fill you with peace that surpasses understanding. Amen.
