"...have no fear..." (Tobit 5:16)
Dear friends in Christ, in the beautiful Book of Tobit, we find Tobit sending his son Tobias on a perilous journey, accompanied by a mysterious guide—who we know is the Archangel Raphael in disguise. As Tobias sets out, his father's words echo with divine assurance: '...have no fear...' These simple yet profound words remind us that even in uncertainty, God's providence is our constant companion. Tobit, blinded and facing trials, chooses trust over terror, faith over fear. It's a testament to the enduring truth that our Heavenly Father watches over every step we take.
Reflecting on this, I can't help but recall the wisdom of St. Augustine, that great Early Church Father, who in his Confessions pondered the human heart's restlessness until it rests in God. Augustine wrote, 'You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.' In moments of fear, like Tobit, we too can find solace in surrendering to God's loving plan. Augustine's own life was a journey from doubt to devotion, teaching us that fear dissipates when we anchor ourselves in divine love. Just as Raphael guided Tobias safely through dangers, so too does the Holy Spirit guide us, whispering, 'Have no fear.'
In our everyday lives, this verse speaks gently to the fears that whisper in our ears—the anxiety of an uncertain job market, the worry over a loved one's health, or the dread of change in a world that feels chaotic. Picture a young parent, like so many of us, lying awake at night fretting over their child's future. Or perhaps it's you, facing a medical diagnosis or a crossroads in your career. These are the real-life Tobit moments, where we're called to release our grip on control and embrace God's guiding hand. I've seen it in my own life: during a time of personal loss, turning to prayer and Scripture brought a peace that surpassed understanding. It's not about denying the storms, but trusting the One who calms them.
Beloved, let this verse from Tobit be your anchor today. Have no fear, for the Lord is with you, just as He was with Tobias. Step forward in faith, knowing that angels—seen and unseen—accompany you. Embrace the journey, rest in His love, and watch how fear transforms into fortitude. You are never alone; God's mercy is your shield. Fear not, dear soul—He has you in His embrace!
