Dear friends in Christ, as we journey through the sacred Scriptures in our #FearNot220 series, today we pause at the foot of Mount Sinai, where the thunder of God's presence shook the earth and the hearts of His people. In Exodus 20:20, Moses speaks words of profound comfort amid the awe-inspiring display: "Do not be afraid, for God has come to you only to test you, and that the fear of him may be before you, that you sin not." (Douay-Rheims) Oh, what a tender reminder from our loving Father! He does not descend in majesty to terrify us, but to refine us, like gold in the furnace, drawing us closer to His divine heart.
In the warm embrace of our Catholic faith, we see this testing not as punishment, but as a loving invitation to grow in virtue. St. Augustine, that luminous Doctor of the Church, reflected deeply on such divine trials in his 'Confessions.' He wrote of how God's tests reveal our weaknesses, not to condemn, but to heal and strengthen us: "You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You." Just as the Israelites trembled before the mountain, Augustine's own life was a testament to God's patient testing—through his youthful wanderings to his eventual conversion, each trial was a step toward sanctity. Early Church Fathers like him remind us that these moments are God's way of awakening a holy fear, a reverent awe that guards our souls from sin and leads us to deeper communion with Him.
Think, beloved, of your own life—those gentle (or sometimes stormy) tests that come unbidden. Perhaps it's the uncertainty of a job loss, whispering fears of provision; or the quiet ache of a loved one's illness, testing your trust in God's mercy. In my own walk, I've faced seasons where doubt clouded my path, like a fog over the hills of Assisi. Yet, in turning to prayer—perhaps a simple Rosary or a visit to the Blessed Sacrament—I found that these were not random hardships, but divine opportunities. God was testing me, not to break me, but to build resilience, to instill that holy fear which keeps us vigilant against temptation. Just as He tested Abraham's faith on Moriah or Job's patience in suffering, He tests us today in the everyday, drawing us into the mystery of His love. It's in these real-life crucibles that we learn to echo Mary's fiat: "Be it done unto me according to Thy word."
So, fear not, dear soul! Embrace these tests as the Potter's hands shaping the clay of your heart. God is near, not to overwhelm, but to transform fear into fortitude, doubt into devotion. Let the fear of the Lord be your shield, guiding you away from sin and toward the eternal banquet. Trust in His providence, for He who parted the seas will surely carry you through. May the intercession of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, calm your storms, and may the Holy Spirit fill you with courage anew. You are beloved, tested yes, but never abandoned. Onward in faith! 🙏
