Verse #128 of 220
🌊 "It is I. Do not be afraid." (John 6:20) #FearNot220 #128of220 #Catholic
Dear friends in Christ, imagine the scene: the disciples, tossed about on the stormy Sea of Galilee, their boat battered by fierce winds and waves. In the dead of night, fear grips their hearts as they spot a figure walking toward them on the water. A ghost? A harbinger of doom? Their terror is palpable, a raw human response to the unknown, the uncontrollable. But then, cutting through the chaos, comes that voice—familiar, steady, divine: "It is I. Do not be afraid."
Oh, how these words resonate through the ages! Jesus, the eternal Word made flesh, reveals Himself not as a distant deity, but as the intimate "I AM," echoing the sacred name of God from Exodus. In this moment, He doesn't just calm the sea; He calms the soul. St. Augustine, that great Early Church Father, reflects beautifully on this in his homilies: "Why were they afraid? Because they did not yet know Him well... But He who made the sea walks upon the sea, that He might teach us not to fear the storms of this world." Augustine reminds us that our fears often stem from forgetting who Christ truly is—the Creator who treads upon the very tempests that threaten to overwhelm us.
In our own lives, don't we face similar storms? Perhaps it's the turbulence of a health crisis, the waves of financial uncertainty crashing against your family's shore, or the dark night of doubt that leaves you questioning your path. I think of Maria, a devoted mother I know, who battled anxiety during her husband's job loss. The bills piled up like gathering clouds, and sleep evaded her as worries swirled. But in quiet prayer, she heard that same whisper: "It is I." Turning to the Eucharist, she found Jesus walking toward her across the chaos, extending His hand. Slowly, peace returned—not because the storm vanished overnight, but because she recognized the One who commands it.
Beloved, in the Catholic tradition, we're invited to this profound trust. The sacraments are our lifeline, the Church our sturdy vessel. When fear rises, remember the saints who faced martyrdom with these words on their lips. Recall Our Lady at the foot of the Cross, unafraid because she knew the "I" who promised resurrection.
So today, whatever gale you're navigating, hear Jesus speak directly to you: "It is I. Do not be afraid." Step out in faith, let Him into your boat, and watch the winds cease. You're not alone—He's with you, always. Fear not, for the Lord is near! Let this truth anchor your heart and inspire you to share His peace with others. May God's blessings calm every storm in your life. 🙏
