Verse #068 of 220

Dear friends in Christ, as we journey through the sacred Scriptures in our #FearNot220 series, today we pause at verse #68 from the prophet Isaiah: '...do not fear the Assyrian...' (Isaiah 10:24). Oh, how these words resonate across the ages, a divine whisper amid the clamor of our fears! In the time of Isaiah, the mighty Assyrian empire loomed like a shadow over God's people, their armies a rod of oppression, much like the Egyptians of old. Yet, the Lord God of hosts speaks tenderly: 'O my people, who live in Zion, do not be afraid.' It's a promise not of immediate escape, but of ultimate deliverance. The rod will break, the yoke will lift, for our God is sovereign over every empire, every threat. Reflecting on this, I am reminded of the wisdom of the Early Church Fathers. St. John Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed preacher of Antioch, often spoke of trusting in God's providence amid trials. In his homilies, he likened the Assyrians to the tempests of life that batter our souls, urging us to anchor ourselves in prayer and faith. 'Let us not fear the waves,' he might say, 'for Christ calms the storm.' How beautifully this echoes Isaiah's assurance—our fears are but fleeting shadows before the eternal light of God's love. In our own lives, who or what are the 'Assyrians' we face? Perhaps it's the uncertainty of a job loss, the ache of illness, or the divisions in our world that seem insurmountable. I think of a dear friend who, battling chronic pain, found solace in this verse. 'It's like God is saying, "I've got this,"' she shared, her voice warm with newfound peace. In the quiet of her suffering, she discovered that fear gives way to trust when we surrender to His will. Just as the saints before us leaned on Scripture, so can we, drawing strength from the Eucharist and the communion of saints. Beloved, in this Catholic walk of faith, let us embrace Isaiah's call. Do not fear the 'Assyrians' of today—be they personal struggles or global unrest. God is with us, His rod and staff comfort us (Psalm 23). Turn to Him in prayer, seek the intercession of Our Lady, and watch as He transforms fear into fortitude. You are not alone; His love conquers all. Fear not, for the Lord is your strength! #FearNot220 #068of220 #Catholic (Word from the heart: If this touches you, share your own 'Assyrian' story in the replies. Let's build each other up in faith.)
