Verse #115 of 220

In the radiant glow of the Transfiguration, as Peter, James, and John fell prostrate in awe before the glorified Christ, flanked by Moses and Elijah, a voice from the cloud thundered, 'This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.' Overwhelmed by divine majesty, the disciples trembled in fear. But then, in a moment of profound tenderness, Jesus approached them, touched them gently, and spoke those liberating words: '...do not be afraid.' (Matthew 17:7) Oh, dear friends in faith, how often do we find ourselves in similar straits—bowed low by the weight of life's transfigurations, those mountaintop moments that reveal both glory and terror? As we journey through our #FearNot220 series, verse #115 invites us to rise from our fears, just as the apostles did. This simple command from our Lord isn't a dismissal of our anxieties but a divine embrace, assuring us that in His presence, fear has no lasting hold. St. John Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed Father of the Early Church, reflected beautifully on this scene in his homilies on Matthew. He reminds us that Jesus' touch and words were not mere comfort but a revelation of His humanity united with divinity—showing that the same God who dazzles in glory stoops to lift us up. Chrysostom urges us to see in this how Christ conquers our fears not by removing trials, but by walking through them with us, transforming terror into trust. Think of your own life, beloved. Perhaps you're facing a health crisis that looms like a shadowy mountain, or financial worries that echo like thunder in your soul. Maybe it's the quiet dread of loneliness in a bustling world, or the fear of failure in pursuing a dream God has planted in your heart. I've known seasons like these myself—times when anxiety gripped me tighter than I cared to admit. But recalling this verse, I remember a gentle real-life connection: a friend who, amid battling cancer, found solace in daily Mass. There, in the Eucharist, she felt Christ's touch anew, whispering, 'Do not be afraid.' It wasn't that the illness vanished, but her spirit rose, fortified by faith's quiet strength. In our Catholic tradition, we're never alone in these valleys; the saints and angels intercede, and the Church's sacraments sustain us. So, let us heed Jesus' call today. Rise, dear one—do not be afraid. Whatever peak or pit you're navigating, know that He who transfigured on Tabor transfigures our fears into faith. Trust in His touch; listen to His voice. You are beloved, held in the Father's pleasure. Step forward in courage, for the light of Christ dispels every darkness. May this truth warm your heart and guide your steps. #FearNot220 #115of220 #Catholic
