Verse #034 of 220
Dear friends in Christ, as we journey through our #FearNot220 series, let us pause and reflect on the powerful words from 2 Kings 6:16: 'Do not be afraid... Our side outnumbers theirs.' In this sacred scripture, the prophet Elisha comforts his frightened servant, whose eyes are opened to behold the heavenly host of fiery chariots and horses surrounding them, vastly outnumbering the earthly army of Aram. What a profound reminder that in our battles—be they spiritual, emotional, or physical—we are never truly alone. God’s invisible army stands ready, far greater than any force arrayed against us.
This verse echoes through the ages, resonating deeply in the writings of the Early Church Fathers. St. John Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed preacher of Antioch, often spoke of divine providence in his homilies. He reminds us that just as Elisha’s servant needed his eyes opened to see the truth, so too must we pray for spiritual vision. 'Fear not,' Chrysostom might say, 'for the Lord of Hosts fights for us, and His angels encamp around those who fear Him.' Drawing from Psalm 34, he encourages believers to trust in God’s overwhelming might, even when circumstances seem dire. This patristic wisdom invites us to shift our gaze from the visible threats to the invisible realities of faith, where victory is assured.
In our everyday lives, don’t we often feel like that servant—surrounded by worries that seem to multiply like an invading army? Perhaps it’s the stress of a demanding job, the pain of a fractured relationship, or the uncertainty of health challenges. I think of a dear parishioner who shared her story: facing a daunting diagnosis, she felt utterly outnumbered by fear and doubt. But through prayer and the sacraments, her eyes were opened to the 'cloud of witnesses'—saints, angels, and the supportive prayers of her community—reminding her that God’s side was stronger. It’s in these gentle, real-life moments that we experience the truth of Elisha’s assurance. When bills pile up, when loneliness creeps in, or when the world’s chaos threatens to overwhelm, remember: our side outnumbers theirs. The Eucharist, the intercession of Mary and the saints, and the Holy Spirit within us form an unbreakable alliance.
Beloved, let this be our anthem today. Do not be afraid! Open your heart to the heavenly reinforcements God provides. Trust in His promise, lean on the wisdom of the Fathers, and step forward with renewed courage. You are surrounded by divine protection, and victory is yours in Christ. May the peace of the Lord dispel every shadow of fear. Amen.
